There are two pathways students can play sports in the UK: competitive or social.
At the competitive level, students expand their athletic skills and play against other universities. Competitive student athletes play inter-university competitions that are run by British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS). Through these leagues, students not only have the opportunity to play across the UK, but also at the European and international level.
Students who aren’t interested in being an athlete, can play social sports through student-run societies and events through their student union. This is for the student who enjoys the sport but is looking to play for fun. Most social sports tend to either play through the university’s sports center or through their Student Union.
