Planning to apply for a UK bachelor's degree for fall 2027? There are several UCAS updates students and college counselors should know before getting started.
Some changes are brand new for 2027, including the ability to upload supporting documents directly to the UCAS application. Others, like the new personal statement format, were introduced for the previous application cycle but are still important to understand if this is your first time completing a UCAS application.
We've broken down what US students and counselors need to know for 2027 entry.
What's New in UCAS for 2027 Entry?
Here are the biggest updates for this application cycle:
- Students can now upload certain supporting documents directly to their UCAS application.
- The UCAS undergraduate application fee for 2027 entry is £34.50 for up to five choices.
- College counselors using the UCAS adviser portal have new tools, including the ability to set internal application deadlines that students can see in their UCAS Hub.
- The three-question personal statement format introduced for 2026 entry continues for 2027.
- The Equal Consideration Deadline for most undergraduate courses is January 13, 2027, at 6:00 p.m. UK time.
Let's look at what each of these means.
Students Can Upload Supporting Documents to UCAS
This is one of the biggest changes for international students applying for 2027 entry.
Students now have the option to upload supporting documents directly to certain sections of their UCAS application.
For international students, these documents can include things like:
- Official qualification certificates
- High school transcripts
- Official translated qualification documents
- SAT or ACT transcripts, where relevant
- English language certificates, when applicable
- Passport and visa or immigration documentation, when applicable
For US students, this can make it easier to provide universities with official documentation they may need when reviewing an application.
There are a few important things to know, though.
Uploading documents is optional. The available upload options depend on the information you enter in your application. You still need to complete all the relevant sections of UCAS itself. Uploading a transcript, for example, doesn't mean you can skip entering your education and qualifications.
You can also make changes to uploaded documents before your application is submitted to UCAS. Once it's been submitted, you can't go back and add or change those uploads.
And don't upload extra documents simply because you have them! If a university needs something additional, it can contact you and explain what to provide.
For more information, see UCAS's guide to uploading supporting documents.
The UCAS Application Fee Is £34.50 for 2027 Entry
For 2027 entry, the UCAS undergraduate application fee is £34.50.
That one application fee allows you to add up to five university and course choices.
Remember that UCAS choices aren't necessarily five different universities. Because UK students apply directly to a specific degree, you're choosing university and course combinations.
If you're also applying to universities in the US, it's helpful to understand how UCAS differs from the Common App before you begin.
The UCAS Personal Statement Has Three Questions
If you've heard someone talk about writing one long UCAS personal statement, there's been an important change!
Beginning with 2026 entry, UCAS replaced the traditional single personal statement with three structured questions. That format continues for 2027 entry.
Students now answer:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
This doesn't mean the personal statement has become three completely separate essays.
The responses still work together to help universities understand why you're interested in your chosen subject, how your academic background has prepared you, and what you've done outside the classroom that supports your interest and readiness for the course.
For US students, this is also where it's important to remember that the UCAS application works differently from many US college applications.
You're applying to study a specific subject, so your responses should help admissions teams understand your preparation and interest in that subject.
What's New for College Counselors Using the UCAS Adviser Portal?
There are also some useful 2027 updates specifically for counselors and advisers.
Set Internal Application Deadlines
Schools and counseling offices can set their own internal application deadlines within the UCAS adviser portal.
Those deadlines appear for students linked to the centre through its buzzword, so students can see the school's deadline directly in their UCAS Hub.
This is especially helpful because your school's internal deadline may be earlier than the official UCAS deadline. Counselors need time to review applications, complete references, and send everything to UCAS.
If your school isn't already set up with UCAS, our guide to creating a UCAS Centre and buzzword can help you get started.
A Clearer View of Student Activity
UCAS has also added tools to the adviser portal that give counselors a clearer overview of students' activity and interests within the UCAS system.
This includes information about how students are exploring subjects and engaging with resources as they research their options.
The goal is to give advisers more information in one place so they can better support students as they research courses and work through the application process.
Counselors Can See Uploaded Document Titles
The new document upload process also affects counselors.
For students linked to a UCAS centre, advisers can see the titles of documents students have uploaded as part of their application.
However, counselors cannot open or view the uploaded documents themselves.
It's a good idea to remind students to review their uploads carefully before submitting their applications. UCAS also makes clear that advisers aren't responsible for checking or verifying those documents.
You can find more details in the official UCAS document upload guidance for advisers.
What About UCAS References?
References are still an important part of the UCAS application.
For students applying through a school or college, the application cannot be sent to UCAS until the reference has been completed.
This is another reason US students should talk to their college counselor early rather than waiting until the UCAS deadline.
The UCAS reference also works differently from a traditional US college recommendation letter, so counselors who are new to UK applications should familiarize themselves with what UK universities are looking for.
Important UCAS Dates for 2027 Entry
Along with the application changes, make sure these dates are on your calendar:
- May 12, 2026: UCAS undergraduate applications opened for 2027 entry.
- September 1, 2026: Completed undergraduate applications could begin being submitted to UCAS.
- October 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. UK time: Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, and most medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine/science courses.

- September 23, 2027, at 6:00 p.m. UK time: Final date for 2027 entry UCAS applications.
Keep in mind that some courses have earlier deadlines. Applying after the Equal Consideration Deadline may also affect whether a university is required to consider your application.

One Important Reminder for US Students
UCAS was designed for applications to UK universities, so don't expect every part of the process to look like a US college application.
You'll apply directly to a course, enter your qualifications differently, answer subject-focused personal statement questions, and work with a reference rather than approaching the application exactly as you would the Common App.
That's why it's important to understand the UK application process before you start filling in boxes.
And if something on the application doesn't look familiar, don't assume you should approach it the same way you would a US application.
