How to Apply for a Bachelor's Degree

Application Systems For Bachelor's Degree

When students apply to UK universities for a bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree, they can choose to apply through three different application systems: UCAS, the Common App, and a university’s direct online application.

The main UK university application system that nearly all students and universities use is UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Students can apply to up to 5 UK universities through UCAS, and there are specific deadlines students need to watch closely.

The application deadline for Oxford and Cambridge, as well as for most medicine, veterinary, and dentistry programs,on October 15th. Most UK universities offer rolling admission, but we recommend applying before the equal consideration deadline in January, since the exact date changes each year, to make sure your spot does not get filled and that you have enough time to apply for funding, scholarships, and your student visa.

Application Requirements For Bachelor's Degree

Since the pandemic, UK universities have reviewed their admissions policies and adapted to a structure that better supports US students and their entry requirements, often referred to as test-optional or test-flexible. Students generally do not need to take an additional exam for admission unless applying to Oxford or Cambridge. Students may need to submit predicted grades from their guidance or college counselor as part of their application. The personal statement will need to be written that is geared towards the subject they are applying to. Once a university makes a decision, the student receives an unconditional, conditional, or unsuccessful offer.

Students who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to pursue a master’s (graduate) degree have two options: applying directly through a university, or applying through UCAS.

UCAS is the main application system for bachelor’s degrees, but it only recently began offering a graduate application option, and most universities still prefer their own direct application through their website. We recommend checking each university’s application page directly before deciding which route to take.

If you are applying for an MBA, business degree, or medical degree, many universities set specific deadlines, though most offer rolling admissions. It is worth checking each course’s individual deadline before applying.

Application Requirements For Master's Degree

The GRE is not required for admission at UK universities. Most programmes do not require a graduate admissions test, though professional degrees may require the GMAT or MCAT. The graduate personal statement must be structured to UK admissions requirements.

As with the undergraduate process, once a university makes a decision, the student receives an unconditional, conditional, or unsuccessful offer.
