If you're currently ripping your hair out over the confusion of applying for a UK Student visa, you've come to the right place!
We're going to break down the process and explain how to apply for a UK Student visa from the US, step by step.
First, a quick note: the old Tier 4 (General) student visa was replaced by the Student visa in 2020. If you're still finding Tier 4 instructions online, some of that information may be outdated.
Let's start with the basics. There are a few things you'll need before beginning your application.
What Do You Need Before Applying for a UK Student Visa?
1. An Unconditional Offer From a UK University
You'll need to have accepted an unconditional offer from a UK university. Your university may also have its own requirements before issuing your CAS, such as paying a tuition deposit.
2. Enough Money for Tuition and Living Costs
You'll need to meet the UK government's financial requirements for your tuition and living expenses.
If you're applying before November 30, 2026, the living-cost requirement is:
- London: £1,529 per month, for up to nine months
- Outside London: £1,171 per month, for up to nine months
For applications made on or after November 30, 2026, the amounts increase to:
- London: £1,570 per month
- Outside London: £1,203 per month
You'll also need enough money to cover your course fees for up to one academic year.
As a US citizen, you generally won't need to submit financial evidence with your initial application. However, you still need to meet the financial requirement, and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) may ask you to provide proof.
If they do, this could include savings, an eligible student loan or official financial sponsorship.

3. Your CAS Reference Number
CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
Your university will provide this reference number once it's ready to sponsor your Student visa application. You'll need to enter it when applying.
You must apply for your visa within six months of receiving your CAS.
4. A Valid Passport
Of course, you'll also need a valid passport!
If yours is close to expiring, consider renewing it before beginning your application.
One more thing: US nationals generally don't need to provide separate proof of English language ability as part of their Student visa application.
When Can You Apply for a UK Student Visa?
If you're applying from the US, you can submit your Student visa application up to six months before your course begins.
For example, if your university program starts in September, the earliest you can apply is March.
Once you're within that six-month window and have your CAS and required documents, you're ready to apply!

You'll apply online through the official UK government website, GOV.UK.

How Much Does a UK Student Visa Cost?
As of 2026, the application fee for a UK Student visa from outside the UK is £558.
You'll also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which gives you access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) while your visa is valid. You may still have to pay for certain healthcare services.
The current student health surcharge is £776 per year.
The total amount depends on how long your visa lasts, which may be slightly longer than your university program.
Because of this, it's best to check the exact surcharge during your application rather than relying on a flat estimate.

What Happens After You Fill Out the Student Visa Application Online?
Once you've submitted your online application, you'll receive instructions for proving your identity.
Depending on your circumstances, you'll either:
- Use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to verify your identity.
- Attend a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
The application will tell you which option applies to you and what to do next.
What Documents Do You Need for a UK Student Visa?
At minimum, you'll need:
- A valid passport or other accepted travel document
- Your CAS reference number
Depending on your circumstances, UKVI may also ask for financial evidence or other supporting documents.
Your application will provide a document checklist with instructions for uploading or submitting anything required.

How Long Does a UK Student Visa Take?
If you're applying from outside the UK, you'll usually receive a decision within three weeks after proving your identity and providing your documents.
Processing times can vary, particularly during busy periods or if UKVI needs additional information.
You may also have the option to pay for a faster decision.
We recommend waiting until you've received your visa decision before booking non-refundable flights or other travel arrangements.
What Happens After Your UK Student Visa Is Approved?
Once your application is approved, you'll receive an eVisa, which is a digital record of your immigration status.
You'll access your eVisa through a UKVI account. Make sure the passport you plan to travel with is linked to that account.

When Can You Arrive in the UK?
- If your course lasts more than six months, you can normally arrive up to one month before it starts.
- If your course lasts six months or less, you can normally arrive up to one week before it starts.
You cannot enter the UK before the start date shown on your visa.
Once your eVisa and travel documents are ready, you're all set to head to the UK and get settled before university begins!
