GI Bill Approved UK Universities | The UK Study Expert

UK Universities That Accept GI Bill Funding for US Veteran Students

You may be surprised to learn that many UK universities accept Veterans Affairs (VA) GI Bill funding for US Veterans and their families. However, not all universities or programmes are eligible for these benefits. Each degree program at a foreign university must be approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) before GI Bill benefits can be used for that program.

To make your UK study search process easier, we have compiled a list of UK universities and degree programs that accept VA GI Bill funding. The following list highlights UK institutions that welcome US veterans and details their eligible programs, contacts, and application processes.

Because VA approval applies to the specific program rather than the university as a whole, students should confirm that their exact degree program is currently approved before enrolling. The VA recommends using its
GI Bill Comparison Tool to check current program approval.

Once you have selected your UK universities and are ready to apply, check out our
guide to using the GI Bill to study in the UK that will help walk you through each step of utilizing your GI Bill benefits at UK universities.

Please note, any universities that are not listed, we welcome you to email [email protected] so we can update this list accordingly.

How Do I Know if a UK University Degree Is GI Bill Approved?

GI Bill approval applies to the specific degree program, not just the university. Before applying, check your exact course in the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool or confirm approval directly with the university.

Using a 529 Plan for a UK University | The UK Study Expert

If you are a student who has a 529 plan, a tax-advantaged savings plan in the United States designed for qualified higher education expenses, you may wonder if you can use it to fund your studies at a university in the United Kingdom (UK). While 529 plans are primarily intended for education expenses in the United States, it is possible to use them for studying abroad, including at a UK university. Here’s a guide on how to use your 529 plan at a UK university:

1. Is Your UK University Eligible for 529 Plan Funds?

The first step is to ensure that your chosen UK university is an eligible institution according to the rules of your 529 plan. Most accredited colleges and universities in the UK are considered eligible institutions for 529 plan purposes. However, it’s always wise to verify this with your plan provider or financial advisor.

2. What Expenses Can You Use a 529 Plan for at a UK University?

Your 529 plan funds can be used to cover “qualified expenses” which typically include tuition, fees, room and board (if you are enrolled at least half-time), textbooks, supplies, and required equipment. However, it’s important to note that expenses such as transportation, insurance, and other personal expenses may not be considered qualified expenses. Make sure to review the specific guidelines of your 529 plan and the expenses allowed for reimbursement.

3. How Do You Withdraw 529 Funds for a UK University?

To access the funds in your 529 plan, you will need to initiate a withdrawal. This can typically be done online or by submitting a withdrawal request form to your plan provider. You will need to specify the amount you wish to withdraw and provide information about the beneficiary (i.e., the student) and the eligible expenses you plan to cover.

4. What Records Should You Keep When Using a 529 Plan for a UK University?

It’s crucial to keep thorough documentation of your expenses and receipts, as you may need to provide them for tax purposes or in case of an audit. This includes tuition bills, enrollment statements, receipts for textbooks and supplies, and other relevant documents. It’s essential to follow the record-keeping requirements of your 529 plan and the U.S. tax laws.

5. Are 529 Withdrawals Tax-Free for UK Universities?

When using your 529 plan to pay for expenses at a UK university, it’s important to understand the potential tax implications and exchange rates. While qualified withdrawals from a 529 plan are generally tax-free at the federal level in the United States, they may be subject to state taxes or penalties if used for non-qualified expenses. Additionally, currency exchange rates can fluctuate, and converting U.S. dollars to British pounds may result in transaction fees or varying exchange rates, which could affect the overall cost of using your 529 plan funds.

6. How Much Should You Budget for a UK University?

It’s crucial to plan ahead and estimate your expenses carefully to ensure that you have sufficient funds in your 529 plan to cover your UK university costs. Tuition, fees, and other expenses at UK universities can vary widely, so make sure to research and budget accordingly.

7. Should You Talk to a Financial Advisor Before Using a 529 Plan in the UK?

Using a 529 plan to pay for expenses at a UK university can be complex, and it’s advisable to seek professional advice from a qualified financial advisor or tax professional to ensure that you are following all the rules and regulations associated with your specific 529 plan, U.S. tax laws, and any applicable UK regulations.

Need Help Using a 529 Plan for a UK University?

In conclusion, while 529 plans are primarily intended for education expenses in the United States, it is possible to use them to fund studies at a UK university. However, it’s essential to understand the rules and regulations of your specific 529 plan, as well as U.S. tax laws and any applicable UK regulations. Proper planning, documentation, and seeking professional advice are crucial.

Guide: Are UK Universities Accredited? | The UK Study Expert

A question we get a lot from American students is if UK universities are accredited, which is really a fancy way of asking: are UK degrees viable and accepted in the United States?

You’ll be happy to know the answer is yes, with a few exceptions for specialty fields.

American students are used to hearing colleges and universities described as accredited, but the UK system works a little differently. UK universities are not accredited by one single organization in the same way you might expect in the US. Instead, UK degrees must be awarded by universities or other institutions with official degree-awarding powers. The
Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) also plays an important role in reviewing and supporting academic quality and standards across UK higher education.

Universities also use external examiners as part of their quality-assurance process, who are drawn from a pool of academic staff from other institutions, as well as business and industry professionals. These examiners routinely assess the quality of a university’s education as compared with other universities, as well as observing assessment processes to make sure things are up to standard.

Can you bring a UK degree back to the US and use it? In many cases, yes. But there isn’t one US agency that automatically recognizes every degree earned overseas. If you’re applying to graduate school, the university decides whether to accept your qualification. For employment, it’s generally up to the employer, and either may ask for a credential evaluation showing how your UK degree compares with a US degree.

As always, there are some exceptions to the rule. For some specialty fields in the US, you may have to take extra exams or classes upon your return to practice in your field.

Here are examples of fields where you may need additional exams, coursework, credential evaluation or professional licensing before you can practice in the USA:

  • Nursing
  • Teaching Credentials (may not transfer over depending on the state)
  • Medicine
  • Social Work
  • Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy
  • Law (may not be able to sit the bar exam depending on the state)
  • Architecture
  • Psychology at the PhD level (if you are wanting to become licensed as a therapist)

Disclaimer: We always recommend doing your own independent research and asking experts in your field about the transferability of UK degrees. State licensing and accreditation boards in the US are especially good sources to ask about this.

Please note that the majority of UK degrees will not need extra accreditation for use in the US. This includes humanities, science, mathematics, business, and a plethora of other degrees! When in doubt, The UK Study Expert can help point you in the right direction about which degrees may need more accreditation.

Using the GI Bill to Study in the UK | The UK Study Expert

If you are a US student who is planning to apply to a university in the UK with the support of the GI Bill, there are several steps you need to take. The GI Bill is a program that provides educational benefits to eligible veterans, service members and qualified family members, and it can be used to study at approved institutions in the UK.

The key thing to know is that the VA has to approve your specific degree program, not just the university. This guide walks you through how to use your GI Bill benefits once you’re ready to study in the UK. If you’re still deciding where to apply, start with our
GI Bill Approved UK Universities & Degrees guide.

Here’s what you need to do.

1. Check That Your UK Degree Is GI Bill Approved

The first step is to make sure the exact degree you want to study is approved by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A university may accept GI Bill benefits without every degree at that university being approved.

Use the
GI Bill Comparison Tool to search for the university and check the approved programs listed there.

You can also reach out to their international office to check if the GI Bill is accepted. Not only does the university need to be approved, but the degree needs to be approved as well.

If your degree isn’t already approved, ask the university about requesting approval from the VA. Only the university can submit that request. The VA recommends waiting until your program has been approved before enrolling because you could be responsible for the tuition and fees if approval is denied.

2. Apply to the University

Once you have selected an approved institution, you will need to apply to the university. Follow the application process for international students, and make sure to mention that you are planning to use the GI Bill benefits. You may also need to provide additional documentation to show that you are eligible for the benefits.

Ask the university which office handles VA benefits and who your School Certifying Official is. This is the person who will report your enrollment to the VA once you’re ready to start your degree.

If you need help with the UK application process itself, our
guide to applying to UK universities walks you through what to expect.

3. Apply for the GI Bill

If you are not already receiving GI Bill benefits, you’ll need to apply through the VA. Veterans, service members, Reservists and Guard members can apply online or use VA Form 22-1990.

If you’re a family member using transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, you’ll apply separately using VA Form 22-1990e. Other benefits for dependents and survivors, including DEA and the Fry Scholarship, have their own application process.

Give yourself plenty of time for this step. The VA recommends that students planning to attend a foreign school submit their application at least 90 days before leaving the US.

4. Provide Your Certificate of Eligibility to the University

Once your benefits are approved, the VA will issue a Certificate of Eligibility, or COE. Take your COE to the university’s School Certifying Official so they can verify your eligibility and submit your enrollment information to the VA.

You won’t begin receiving GI Bill payments until the VA has received and processed that enrollment information. If you need an updated COE for a foreign university, you can request one through Ask VA.

5. Verify Your Enrollment Each Month

Depending on which GI Bill benefit you use, you may need to verify your enrollment with the VA at the end of each month. This includes Post-9/11 GI Bill students who receive a monthly housing allowance or kicker payment and are enrolled at least half time.

If you’re required to verify, don’t skip it even if your payment has already arrived. For Post-9/11 GI Bill students, the VA can pause monthly payments after two consecutive months without verification.

You should definitely still attend your university’s international student orientation. It’s a good way to learn about campus resources, visa support, housing and anything else you need to know before classes begin.

6. Keep the VA and Your University Updated

Throughout your time at the university, keep an eye on your benefits and make sure your enrollment information stays accurate. If you drop a class, change your course load, withdraw or make another change to your enrollment, let your School Certifying Official know as soon as possible.

Changes to your enrollment can affect your GI Bill payments and may lead to an overpayment if the VA has already paid benefits based on your previous enrollment.

What Does the GI Bill Cover at a UK University?

If you are using the Post-9/11 GI Bill at an approved UK university, your benefits may include tuition and mandatory fees, a monthly housing allowance, and money for books and supplies. How much you receive depends on your eligibility level and the current VA rates.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, the VA will pay up to $30,908.34 in net tuition and mandatory fees at a foreign university for students eligible for the full Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit. The rate runs from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027.

If your tuition is higher than the VA limit and you qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Program, some foreign universities participate and may help cover part of the remaining cost. You can check participating schools through the
GI Bill Comparison Tool.

For 2026–2027, students using the full Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit at a foreign university may also receive up to $2,522 per month for housing and up to $1,000 per academic year for books and supplies. Your actual payment depends on your eligibility and how much school you’re attending.

Can You Use the GI Bill for an Online UK Degree?

Generally, no. The VA does not approve independent study, including distance-learning programs, at foreign schools. If you plan to study directly through a UK university, check the delivery format as well as the university and degree before assuming your program will qualify.

Is Studying at a UK University the Same as Studying Abroad?

Not for GI Bill purposes. If you enroll directly at a UK university and that university awards your degree, the VA considers it a foreign program. Study abroad generally means you remain enrolled at a US university and take courses overseas that count toward your US degree.

Need Help Planning Your UK University Application?

Once you know your degree is GI Bill approved and your benefits are underway, you can focus on the UK application itself.

If you’re still deciding where to study, start with our

Dual Offers Dilemma: US vs UK Choice | The UK Study Expert

As a US student faced with the dilemma of accepting an offer from a US university for May 1 or meeting the conditional offer from a UK university in June, careful consideration and planning are crucial. Here are some professional suggestions on how to navigate this situation and make an informed decision.

  1. Consider Accepting the US Offer: Given the May 1 deadline commonly set by US universities, it may be wise to accept the US offer and secure a spot. This allows for certainty in the short term, while also providing the opportunity to explore options with the UK offer.

  2. Evaluate the Conditional Offer: US students should carefully review the conditions attached to the UK offer. Assess the likelihood of meeting these conditions, such as achieving specific grades or fulfilling other requirements, by the stipulated deadline in June. You may be able to ask your UK university if this is a hard conditional requirement. If you are just short of meeting the requirement, the US recruitment officer may be able to speak on your behalf to admissions. If you don’t meet their requirements, you can also rely on your insurance university choice as a back-up or the university may be able to provide another option, such as a Foundation Year.

  3. Explore Deferral Options: If feeling torn between the two offers, US students may want to consider deferring one of them. Some US and UK universities may offer deferral options, allowing students to postpone their admission for a year. This can provide additional time to make an informed decision and meet the conditions of the UK offer.

  4. Communicate with Universities: It’s important to keep communication lines open with both US and UK universities. Inform them about your decision, inquire about deferral options, and seek clarifications on any queries or concerns you may have. Professional and timely communication can help navigate the process smoothly.

  5. Evaluate Priorities and Goals: Reflect on your priorities and long-term goals. Consider factors such as academic programs, university reputation, location, career opportunities, and cost of education. Carefully weigh the pros and cons of studying in the US versus the UK, and how each aligns with your personal and professional aspirations.

  6. Consider Financial Implications: Evaluate the financial aspects of both offers, including tuition fees, living expenses, and available financial aid options. Factor in potential currency exchange rates and cost of living in the UK. Develop a budget and assess the financial impact of each option.

In conclusion, US students facing the decision of accepting offers from both US and UK universities should approach it strategically. By carefully considering the conditional offer, exploring deferral options, communicating with universities, and evaluating priorities and financial implications, students can make an informed decision that aligns with their academic and career goals.

Study Arts in the UK: Affordable Degrees | UK Study Expert

Are you or your students interested in earning a degree in the arts? Last week, The UK Study Expert hosted a webinar along with 5 top UK arts universities discussing why earning your art degree in the UK compared to the US is a far better investment and choice. We discussed the UK’s growing economy, cost differences, graduate employability and more.

The following universities were represented:

Falmouth University

Goldsmiths University of London

Leeds Arts University

Arts University Bournemouth

Ravensbourne University

Below, we break down why studying arts in the UK as an American can provide many benefits:

1. Enhance your artistic skills and knowledge:

The UK is renowned for its arts education, and studying here can help you develop your artistic skills and knowledge. You can learn from renowned artists and scholars, participate in workshops, and gain hands-on experience through internships and other practical opportunities.

2. Three year bachelor’s degrees:

These represented arts universities are based in England, therefore, their degrees are only 3 years long. Students are able to specialize in their declared subject from day 1 and are not required to take any general education classes. This allows the student to save an additional year of expenses, advance their career quicker, and allows them to specialize in the subject they are most passionate in.

3. Affordable and competitive compared to US universities:

The average tuition to study at an US arts university can range from $40,000 to $55,000 per year. Studying in the UK is a fraction of the price. The average cost of tuition from the following represented universities is $21,000 per year, plus it is a three year bachelor’s degree, which saves a student an additional year of tuition and living expenses.

4. Expand your career prospects:

Studying arts in the UK can open up many career opportunities, both in the UK and around the world. The creative economy contributed £116 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2019, greater than the aerospace, automotive, life sciences, oil, and gas sectors combined. Students who wish to stay in the UK after they graduate, can apply for the Graduate Route Visa, which allows students to work for up to two years after they graduate. Students have the opportunity to network with industry professionals, showcase your work in exhibitions, and gain exposure to different artistic fields and disciplines.

5. Exposure to different cultural perspectives:

Studying in the UK can provide you with a unique opportunity to experience a new culture and broaden your worldview. You will have the chance to interact with people from different backgrounds, learn about their perspectives, and gain a deeper understanding of their values and traditions.

6. Study abroad experience:

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience, and the UK offers an excellent opportunity for American students to live and study in a foreign country. You can improve your language skills, gain independence, and develop cultural competencies that can benefit you throughout your life.

Overall, studying arts in the UK as an American can provide a unique and rewarding experience that can help students grow both personally and professionally.

New UK ETA Travel Authorization 2024 | The UK Study Expert

The introduction of the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme in the United Kingdom will have an impact on US students visiting UK universities and likely students studying abroad for less than 6 months.

The ETA is a digital travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the United Kingdom, which will be required for boarding a plane for travel to the country. This new scheme is designed to strengthen the control and compliance of UK borders, and the ETA application process is expected to take less than 15 minutes with a decision provided within 78 hours.

For US students and families interested in visiting UK universities, this means that they will need to apply for an ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom. This additional step in the travel process may cause some inconvenience, but it is not expected to significantly impact the number of US students visiting the country. The ETA is similar to the ESTA in the United States, which US citizens are already familiar with. Overall, the ETA scheme is a measure to enhance border security and compliance, but it will not be a significant hindrance for US student visits.

When will this come into effect?

The scheme is set out into three separate phases. The first phase will be starting in 2023, however the US will probably be affected in 2024 as it will be phased in over time. The Home Office claims that the scheme will be completed and live for all visa-exempt travelers by the end of 2024. The UK Study Expert will be monitoring this information.

How will this affect study abroad students?

US study abroad students who are studying a semester for less than 6 months and aren’t required to apply for a visa, may be affected if starting their studies after September 2024.

How Much Does it Cost to apply for the UK ETA?

Full details of the British Home Office have not been released yet, but travel and immigration experts have determined it will likely cost between $5 and $20 USD for US citizens based on similar schemes in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and what non citizens pay for an ESTA to visit the US.

Affordable Degrees in the UK for Students | UK Study Expert

Many students and parents have the misconception that studying in the UK will be more expensive than staying in the US. They couldn’t be more wrong!

Studying in the UK ends up being the same cost, if not cheaper, than studying in the US. According to this recent article from Forbes, US university tuition and expenses are higher than almost every other country.

University Tuition and Living Costs in the UK vs. the US

Going to university in the UK is far more financially beneficial to go to university in the UK than in the US. The average tuition for a year of education in the UK can range from $12,000 – $31,000 for a year 3 bachelor’s degree, compared to the US, where the average tuition for one year is $25,707 (in-state tuition) and can go up to $54,501 (private universities).

As for Living expenses (accommodation + travel + food, etc.) can be anywhere from $11,000 to $18,000 per year (British Council, 2022).

Some students manage to do things even cheaper than that! It depends on your lifestyle, and if you’re living in student housing, or private housing, with or without flatmates.

Why are UK degrees generally cheaper? Let’s go over the reasons why, as well as the ways US students fund their UK studies.

UK Degrees are Shorter in Length

Students can complete both their bachelor’s and master’s degree in just 4 years – saving them 2 years of expensive tuition and living expenses.

Standard degrees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland universities are 3 years in length. Master’s degrees are completed in 1 year. PhD’s can range from 3 to 4 years.

Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule for specialty programs, but the lengths mentioned above are generally the case. Cutting out an extra year of study is undoubtedly going to save a student a lot of cash!

As for Scotland, bachelor’s degrees are 4 years in length. The price a student would pay studying in Scotland would be comparable to studying at an in-state university in the US, however, the experience couldn’t quite compare.

So, if you are looking to strategically save and earn both your bachelor’s and master’s degree, the UK is a highly attractive option. Earning both degrees in the US could take as long as 6 years or more. Can you imagine coming back to the US with a master’s degree, while your friends studying in the US have just completed or are trying to complete their bachelor’s degree?

Costs Vary by University and Location

There is a narrow range of tuition costs across the UK, thus, it’s pretty easy to apply to universities within your budget with a little research. Not surprisingly, universities outside of London will be cheaper than universities within London, especially when it comes to accommodation and living costs. Welsh universities end up being a steal, so don’t sleep on them!

Furthermore, if a university is really well known or very highly ranked, they may be more expensive than universities that are lesser known. Our search tool can help you discover universities that offer a good education, but aren’t as well known as some of the main contenders you’ve already heard of.

Using FAFSA to Fund Your UK Studies

Did you know that FAFSA will let you use your student loans for UK universities? The process works the same as the US: UK universities have FAFSA codes you can easily plug into the application.

Once you confirm an offer at a UK university, you’ll work with the finance team to complete the FAFSA process. It’s really that simple!

Scholarships are Available

UK universities open up scholarships to students in early spring. Scholarships typically range from £1,000 – £5,000 and are applied for after you send in your university application. Many students are able to win scholarships that help offset costs.

If you are looking for larger scholarships, check out our scholarships page to learn a variety of options.

Employment in the UK as a Student

Beyond loans and scholarships, you can actually work up to 20 hours in the UK while studying. Outside of term, students are able to work up to 40 hours a week. This is not a common practice in every country, so it’s a nice bonus that the UK offers students this option.

Application Fees are Cheap and/or Non Existent

One thing to note is that application fees are also very cheap in the UK. It’s roughly  $30 to apply to up to 5 universities for bachelor’s programs, and generally free to apply to master’s and PhD programs (except for some specialty programs, like MBA’s). This makes it easy and cheap for a student to apply to UK programs.
